East Grinstead Town

A walk down East Grinstead's medieval High Street is like stepping back in time with its continuous run of 14th-century timber-framed buildings, one of the longest and most stunning in England. Wherever you venture around this traditional market town, you'll soon discover an amazing collection of historic buildings, including the magnificent and dominating St Swithun's Church.

East Grinstead has retained its individual and quirky independent shops, offering a fabulous range of traditionally crafted goods and locally produced fare. You can even enjoy a hearty meal and local ale where many a smuggler of bygone days took refuge in one of the friendly and hospitable coaching inns.

The Greenwich Meridian line runs through the eastern side of East Grinstead town and is marked out by terracotta marker stones along its tree-lined route through the grounds of East Court mansion, the home of the Town Council, so visitors to the town can literally straddle both east and west at the same time.

Step outside of the town centre and you are straight into the glorious Ashdown Forest and High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). AA Milne lived on the edge of Ashdown Forest and The Hundred Acre Wood of the Winnie the Pooh stories was based on the forest's Five Hundred Acre Wood.
